Katie Couric’s recent confession about her struggle with bulimia is bringing new focus to eating disorders. While there are multiple factors that lead to eating disorders, the emphasis our society places on being thin certainly doesn’t help matters.
And while mannequins have always been thin, there was a time during the 1950’s when they at least had curves and were a little busty (thank you Marilyn Monroe). But now, the average size of a mannequin found in luxury retail stores is shrinking from a size 4 to a size 2.
This video from mannequin manufacturer Ralph Pucci International highlights this unfortunate trend. Their company often sculpts their mannequins after supermodels, like Christy Turlington, and even their bodies are not good enough. In the video he says that they will still tweak the body before mass producing it – to make it even smaller.
