Rootstein was commissioned twice to produce a life size version of Barbie. The first was in 1983 and the second time was in 2008 for the 50th anniversary of Barbie the following year.
The 2009 event had a lot of fanfare and publicity. This article from the Los Angeles Times details all the events including the unveiling of the Rootstein Barbie at Bloomingdales and the Barbie fashion show that took place at Fashion Week

A party for Barbie was held at the Rootstein showroom and Barbie was decked out in a variety of custom made outfits which you can see snippets of on this Youtube video:
