Flower Crown Class

Reimagining STEAM Programming Through Wearable Art

Initially our Flower Crown workshop was designed to be a circular fashion activity to create wearable art.  But after hosting a few flower crown workshops for youth groups we realized that it is also a STEAM workshop.

The flowers and embellishments may make it appear that this is just an arts and crafts workshop, but if you look closer, you will see the educational and artistic value of the class. It is a curriculum wrapped in flowers.

STEAM stands for:

  • Science
  • Technology
  • Engineering
  • Arts
  • Mathmatics

While STEM focuses on technical disciplines alone, STEAM intentionally integrates the arts — because innovation and problem solving requires imagination.

Participants in our flower crown class  learn — without even realizing it —

Structural integrity     Engineering   Problem-solving  Design formation.

Invention        Material flexibility    Attachment techniques

Weight distribution    Spatial balance       Visual Storytelling

That’s STEAM in action, wrapped in petals.  And the best part?

It doesn’t feel like a lesson. It feels like joy! Plus  arts and crafts foster a “safe” environment to experiment, fail, and iterate on designs which promotes resilience.

When someone places their finished crown on their head, they are not just wearing flowers.

They are wearing a decision-making process. A solved design challenge. A moment of creative courage and personal expression. A sense of confidence for completing  a project they designed by hand.

And since at  least 50% of our crafting materials are repurposed, their flower crowns are an opportunity to have a conversation about creative reuse, sustainability and the beauty/value of “used” goods.

Our flower crown workshop is accessible to all ages, which makes it an ideal for libraries, museums, youth programs, and community organizations seeking STEAM-aligned programming. And we can customize the materials we bring to appeal to a specific demographic or cultural activity. For example Dia De Los Muertos or Lunar New year.
