How to Make a DIY Breastplate Using a Mannequin Torso for Cosplay, Film, and Costume Design

Breastplates (also called boob armor) used to just be something worn with a costume. Think Wonder Woman. Or a holiday costume like this one:

But now it has become the cool, hip thing to wear on the red carpet. Many celebrities have done it, check out the styles rocked by Zendaya, Jennifer Lopez , Gwyneth Paltrow and Lupita Nyongo’o.

If you like this look you can either pay hundreds of dollars to purchase one. OR you make one yourself with a mannequin hollow back torso like the ones we sell in our Amazon store here. If you are in the SF Bay Area we often have used hollow back torsos at discount prices in our Oakland warehouse.

This blog shows six different tutorials of creatives that made their own breastplates. Each creator took a slightly different approach to their work. Check out their tutorials to find the style that works best for your crafting skill level.

In this first example, this creator made an orange breastplate and a matching skirt from a Nike plastic bag.
