Since 2001 we’ve been selling new and used mannequins at Mannequin Madness and we’ve answered hundreds of questions about mannequins. So we decided to put together a list of the most commonly asked questions and post the answers here.
What materials are mannequins made of?

Mannequins – and their parts – are commonly made from fiberglass, plastic, or wood. Fiberglass is durable and lightweight, while plastic is more budget-friendly. The choice of material affects durability and weight.
2 What’s the difference between realistic and abstract mannequins?
Realistic mannequins have detailed facial features, eyelashes and lifelike skin tones. They are usually bald to be capable of wearing a wig. Abstract mannequins are minimalistic and focus on shape rather than detail.
3 How do I clean a mannequin?
Our favorite product for cleaning mannequins is Mr. Clean Magic Eraser. It consistently removes marks and dirt. Regular dusting with a soft cloth is also a good idea. For stubborn stains, a mild soap solution can be used.
4 Can mannequins be repaired if they are chipped or cracked?

You can use epoxy resin or fiberglass repair kits for chips or cracks, followed by sanding and painting to match the original finish. We have a list of resources and tutorials for mannequin repairs here. If your mannequin needs extensive repairs, you might want to send it to a mannequin refurbishing company which is also on our resource list.
5 Can I paint or decorate a mannequin?
Absolutely! Use acrylic paint or spray paint designed for plastic or fiberglass. Priming the surface beforehand will ensure better adhesion. Here is an article about spray painting a mannequin.

6 What are some unique ways to repurpose mannequins?
Popular ideas include turning them into planters, lamps, art installations or Dress Form Christmas trees. For inspiring ideas and tutorials on the most popular mannequin DIY projects, click here.
7 Can mannequins be used outdoors?

Some mannequins are designed for outdoor use, but you’ll need to apply weather-resistant paint. Protect them from direct sun and rain to avoid fading or warping.
8 Can I rent mannequins instead of buying them?
Yes, renting mannequins can be a cost-effective solution for short term needs. For a list of companies in the US and Europe that rent mannequins click here.
9 How do I make a mannequin display more engaging?

A mannequin needs context. Use props, themed backgrounds, creative lighting, or dynamic poses. Layered clothing and accessorizing can also enhance the visual appeal.
10 How do I keep mannequins from tipping over?
Most mannequins come with sturdy bases. If stability is an issue, use sandbags or weights at the base for extra support.
11 What’s the best way to store mannequins when not in use?
Disassemble them if possible, and store each part in a clean, dry place. Cover with fabric or bubble wrap to avoid dust and damage.
12 What is the difference between a mannequin and a manikin?
Traditionally ”mannequin” refers to human-shaped figures used in retail stores to display clothing, while “manikin” denotes models used in medical or educational settings for medical simulation and emergency drills.
The main difference is that mannequins are stationary models that advertise products, while mannikins are more realistic and anatomically correct models that are capable of simulating real life scenarios.

13 How much is my vintage mannequin worth?
The value of vintage mannequins varies based on factors like age, condition, brand and rarity. This article we wrote here explains in detail about accessing the value of a vintage mannequin.
14 How do I keep clothes from slipping off mannequins?
Use pins, clips, double-sides tape or even rubber bands hidden under the clothing to keep garments n place.
15 What is a ghost mannequin?
A ghost mannequin is designed for photography, allowing clothes to appear as if they’re floating without a model visible. For more information about how to use ghost mannequins and where to buy them click on these links.

16 What are flexible mannequins?
Flexible mannequins have bendable joints and limbs, allowing for a wide range of poses. These are ideal for sports or activewear displays. We have a collection of bendable male, female and child mannequins for sale here.

17. Where can I get a dress form with my exact measurements.?
There are two options. The least expensive is to buy dress form close to your measurements and then buy a set of fitting pads to fill out areas (bust, waist, hips) that need adjusting.
Or to get an exact replica of your body a company called Ditto Form will take a 3D scan of your body.
