Flower Crown Class

Employee Engagement Meets Wellness: Honoring Mental Health Awareness Month at Work

Last May for Mental Health Month the employees at ScaleAI, a tech company in the Bay Area, participated in the flower crown class that Mannequin Madness brought to their offices.

The organizer of the event had first heard about our class  because she had discovered us through the Airbnb Experiences program. She had booked the Floral Crown Workshop experience for her family when they were visiting from out-of-town.

They had such a blast, she decided the activity would be a good group activity for ScaleAI employees for Mental Health Awareness Month in May.

According to the National Alliance for Mental Illness, the month is to raise awareness about mental health and “highlight the resilience and diverse experiences that shape mental health journeys within our country.” (In case you didn’t know, 1 in 5 U.S. adults live with a mental health condition.)

But the bigger question was: Would a group of young “techies” enjoy the Floral Crown Workshop activity as much as her relatives? The answer was an unqualified YES!

Even the most high-performing teams need time to recharge and reconnect. That’s where the magic of flowers and other fun embellishments – rhinestones, feathers, shells and pearls – come in.

Once the tech pros had a chance to step away from their screens and into a world of color, texture, and creative expression, they totally immersed themselves in our creative world.

Everyone was pleasantly surprised at how relaxing and pleasurable the Floral Crown Workshop was for their overall disposition as well as the work climate.

It’s been proven to revitalize your mood, improve self-confidence, and reduce overall stress. And, making something by hand has all kinds of therapeutic benefits.

One person called the activity a “playdate”. And said  “the  first thing I loved was a sense of “freedom” – the gift of choice – to make something just for ME! With the basket in hand, it was like a treasure hunt, expanding my thinking on ‘what could be’ – exploring possibilities.

The actual construction of my headdress was another wild experience ~ to just stop and focus on something crafty and tactical was powerful. There were no mistakes and no consequences; only lots of laughter and free play time for me!”

Another said: “It was truly an unexpected rewarding experience. I came through their doors needing a boost that day and during my time there, was so uplifted, happy and motivated to tackle the rest of the day.“

Male employees enjoyed the class as much as the women. Some of them made the flower crowns for their wives or girlfriends, others made them for themselves.

Overall, the Floral Crown Workshop was just the right activity to observe Mental Health Awareness Month at ScaleAI. And, we were pleased to offer it!
