Flower Crown Class

Flower Crown or Feather Headdress — Design Both in Our Wearable Art Workshop in Oakland, Ca

Most people come to our flower crown classes expecting to make something with flowers. Then they discover feathers.

Suddenly a simple flower crown becomes a dramatic headdress, a festival accessory, a costume piece, or a wearable work of art that’s completely their own.

Feathers instantly bring movement and flair to a design.  Feathers have been used for centuries in ceremonial wear, cultural traditions, and fashion. From Indigenous regalia to carnival costumes to high-fashion runways, feathers symbolize beauty, transformation, and freedom.

Some of our students use feathers as an accent piece on their flower crown….

Others design their headdress exclusively with feathers.

Here are some of the reasons why we offer flowers…and more images of the headdresses our students have made.

Height & Drama: Feathers can add dimension without weighing you down. Even a few plumes can instantly elevate a design.

Movement: Unlike flowers, feathers naturally sway and flow, giving the headdress life and motion.

Versatility: Feathers can be arranged in symmetrical patterns for elegance, or wild bursts for a free-spirited look.

Color & Texture: From earthy neutrals to electric brights, feathers allow you to experiment with bold looks that flowers can’t always achieve.

Just like flower crowns, feather headdresses are versatile. You can wear them at:

Festivals like this one that I wore at the Black Joy Parade which mixes feathers with cowrie shells.

Costume parties, where standing out is a must.

Photo shoots, when you want something memorable.

One of the things we love most about our workshops is that no two people leave with the same design. Some create delicate floral crowns. Others build bold feathered headdresses that look ready for a parade, performance, or photoshoot. The materials may be the same, but the results are always personal .

Beyond their beauty, feathers carry profound meaning across many cultures.

Strength & Power: Certain feathers, like eagle or hawk, represent courage, wisdom, and leadership.

Connection to the Divine: Feathers are often viewed as messages from angels, guides, or loved ones.

Freedom & Lightness: They remind us to let go of what no longer serves us and rise above challenges.

Transformation: Like birds shedding and renewing feathers, they symbolize rebirth and personal growth.

Whether feathers have symbolic meaning for you or your just appreciate their special features, a feather-embellished headdress can bring you joy and beauty!
