Mannequin History

A free Ebook about The  Legend & Legacy of Adel Rootstein Mannequins

Walk into most stores today and you’ll see mannequins that are abstract, faceless, and interchangeable.

It wasn’t always that way.

Decades ago, one company transformed retail displays by creating mannequins based on real people, real personalities, and real cultural icons. Instead of simply holding clothes, they told stories.

The result was a generation of mannequins that became as recognizable as the fashions they displayed. Today many of those mannequins are collected, preserved, and even exhibited in museums.

As someone who has spent more than 20 years buying, selling, recycling, and studying mannequins, I’ve always been fascinated by how a display fixture became a piece of design history.

That fascination led me to create a free ebook documenting the history, craftsmanship, collections, and enduring legacy of Adel Rootstein mannequins. (the link to download is below)

Discovering Rootstein

When I started Mannequin Madness in 2001 and began recycling mannequins from retail stores, I knew nothing about the Rootstein brand. What I did notice was that these mannequins were different.

They had personality. They had movement. They looked remarkably lifelike compared to many of the other mannequins passing through our warehouse.

As I continued recycling mannequins from store closures, remodels, and liquidations, I encountered more Rootstein mannequins and became increasingly curious about them.

The more I learned, the more I understood why they had developed such a devoted following among collectors, visual merchandisers, fashion historians, and design enthusiasts.

Why I Decided to Write This Ebook

One thing that surprised me as I learned more about Rootstein mannequins was how difficult it was to find information about the company and its collections – this was when the internet was still in its infancy stages.

Much of the knowledge existed in scattered conversations, private collections, old catalogs, and the memories of former visual merchandisers and collectors.

Over the years, I encountered people who were generous with their knowledge and eager to share what they knew. I also encountered others who viewed that information as something to be guarded, restricted, or available only to a select few.

That experience reinforced my belief that the history of Adel Rootstein and her mannequins should be documented and made accessible to anyone who is interested. Fashion history should be preserved and shared, not hidden away.

This ebook is my contribution toward making that knowledge more widely available.

Why Rootstein Matters

Founded by Adel Rootstein, the company revolutionized the mannequin industry by moving away from stiff, generic forms and creating figures based on real people.

Many of the era’s most recognizable models and personalities were immortalized as Rootstein mannequins. Their realistic poses, distinctive expressions, and extraordinary attention to detail transformed store windows into visual storytelling experiences.

Rootstein mannequins became synonymous with luxury retail and could be found in the windows of prestigious department stores and fashion retailers around the world.

Today they are admired not only as retail displays but also as important examples of fashion history, design, and visual culture.

Preserving a Piece of Fashion History

For more than two decades, Mannequin Madness has helped keep mannequins out of landfills through our recycling and reuse programs.

Along the way, we have rescued countless mannequins from disposal, including many Rootstein figures.

Each time a Rootstein mannequin appears in a recycling project, I am reminded that these are more than store fixtures. They are artifacts of a particular moment in fashion and retail history.

One of the largest Rootstein recycling projects I handled took place in 2020 when I recycled a truckload of Rootstein mannequins from a luxury shopping mall in a high end Las Vegas hotel. Experiences like that reinforced how much retail history can be lost when stores close, remodel, or liquidate.

That is one reason I felt it was important to document what I had learned and help preserve this knowledge for future generations.

About the Ebook

This free ebook was created with contributions from individuals who have spent decades studying, collecting, and working with Rootstein mannequins.

One contributor is a longtime collector and customer of mine who owns more than 200 Rootstein mannequins. He previously worked as a retail merchandising executive responsible for purchasing Rootstein mannequins for a major retail chain.

Another contributor grew up in a family that owned a regional chain of retail stores during the height of Rootstein’s popularity.

Together, we combined our experiences, research, photographs, and knowledge to create a resource that we hope will be valuable to collectors, fashion historians, visual merchandisers, retailers, and anyone interested in the legacy of Adel Rootstein. Not a single word or photograph in the book was generated by ChatGBT.

Inside you’ll find:
