Every year on March 8, people around the world celebrate the women in their lives by observing International Women’s Day. In addition to shopping at women-owned businesses and using the day to give money or resources to organizations that help women throughout the year, many people also follow the tradition of gifting flowers on March 8.

The history of International Women’s Day stretches back more than 100 years when the day was first observed across Europe and America. But according to NPR, it wasn’t until March 8, 1946, that feminists in Italy chose the mimosa flower as a symbol of strength, sensibility, and sensitivity for Women’s Day.

Mimosa seems like a delicate flower, but in fact is very resistant and can grow anywhere, even in the harshest of environments. Its bright yellow color and floral fragrance can change your mood. It is used in traditional herbal medicine for its calming and steadying properties.

Over the years, women and men alike have continued to give the gift of flowers to show their appreciation for the strong women in their lives. And although the mimosa flower has a special significance, it’s not the only flower given.

Many famous and infamous women have chosen to wear headdresses as adornment. Several of their photos are sprinkled throughout this article.

For a twist on this flower giving tradition, we suggest you make a flower crown headdress. Then the flowers aren’t just in a vase at your home or work, but on your head for all the world to admire and appreciate.

At the Headdress Workshop in Oakland, Ca, we have group classes every Sunday where you can make your own flower crown. We provide flowers in a wide range of colors, varieties and textures so you can pick your favorites. We also can host a private event for you at our facility and you can bring in food and refreshments. Or we have a mobile version and can come onsite to your facility.

And, because all the flowers we offer are faux, you will can wear your headdress for years to come. And you can have special fantasy flowers like these gold ones in the flower crown worn by this legendary lady:

Besides flowers we have other embellishments like butterflies, jewels, shells and more.

f you bring a friend with you to the group class class, their ticket is 1/2 off when you use the code Friend at check out. So can honor yourself and honor your BFF for Women’s History Month.

Speaking of BFFs, here is one of mine: Sheila Coates of BYOB unlimited, wearing a flower crown made by a staff member of The Headdress Workshop that she wore when she received a Living Legend award for her work in the entertainment industry.
