The Fir Lady is back!

Regular followers will know that each year I build a Christmas fir lady from boughs of pine and whatever else is to hand; each year she has a slightly different character but always the same sweeping glamour and presence.  This year, we’re in the midst of building work (so exciting; I’ll post a tour of it all in January :-)), so I’ve built her in what will soon be a brand new orangery.  For now though it’s an empty, gallery-like space that harnesses the weak winter light and gives her an ethereal glow for most of the day.

We frequently rent mannequins as props for various fund raisers and promotional activities for
Breast Cancer Awareness month.
Many of activities were for BRA Day (breast reconstruction day) where people compete for the
most creative way to decorate a bra to bring attention to this medical condition.
Like this one which focuses on some of the iconic symbols of breast cancer awareness and, of
course, the signature hot pink color.

Perhaps in an effort to contend with America’s dark history of death and exploitation, the Met’s Costume Institute has released some of the most cursed promotional images of the year. This year’s exhibition, “In America: An Anthology of Fashion,” has rooms staged by great American directors. What these rooms lack, however, are mannequins that don’t make you want to claw your own eyes out. Nine directors — Sofia Coppola, Martin Scorsese, Regina King, Autumn de Wilde, Chloé Zhao, Janicza Bravo, Radha Blank, Julie Dash, and Tom Ford — were assigned rooms that vibed with their film work. “It invites the audience in,” Coppola told Vogue. “Hopefully you get lost in the moment of each space.” You could definitely get lost staring into the eyes of the fainting woman in de Wilde’s take on the Benkard Room.
